First introduced in 1968, the BMW 2002’s name is explained by its 2000cc engine and 2 doors hence 2000 + 2. Believe it or not, the BMW 2002 was created by chance, when two senior BMW executives each had a new M10B20 engine (2.0L engine) installed in place of the 1.6L engine in their BMW 1602s – which proved to be a very enjoyable experience – the two gentlemen made a proposal to make it a production vehicle which had a total production run of almost 400,000 units. Over the course of its production run between 1966 to 1977, over 837,038 units were made worldwide.
The car seen here is a 1975 BMW 2002 Automatic, finished in Sienna Brown with a Beige interior. It is an original BMW UK dealer car that was imported to Hong Kong in 2011. While we are unable to confirm if this car was professionally restored (outside and inside), the seller does report it is overall in excellent condition and runs perfectly – the only issue being an inoperable tachometer in the instrument cluster. No other exterior, interior, or running gear modifications have been done to this example, aside from a set of 15” OZ Alpina wheels it currently rides on. Since its arrival in Hong Kong, it has had four previous owners and has a current mileage of 63,572 miles (102,309 km). Please note its road license has expired as of 28th February, 2021.
For a car that is forty seven years old, this classic BMW coupe is in excellent condition. No imperfections can be found on any of its body panels – not even the slightest amount of patina or corrosion on the trim, body, or chromed pieces. The external front and rear bumpers are in perfect condition with no corrosion on their joints – the front grille is also free of any signs of age. Both side doors, the front hood and rear trunk open and close with ease – with no audible squeaks when any of them are opened. All of their hinges and latches are free of any corrosion or patina as well. All of the exterior chrome trim is present – neither has lost any of their reflective surface to this day. All four 15” OZ Alpina wheels are in excellent condition with no kerb rash or surface patina – though the left front wheel has a slightly small area with a loss of paint, this can easily be touched up with some TLC or a full wheel refurbishment. All of the original window trim has been preserved with no missing portions. The front headlights, rear tail lights, and side markers are free of any damage on their casings and all operate normally. All of the original exterior badges – from the BMW badges to the ‘2002’ emblems have been preserved and are fully intact.
Interior and Trim
A look inside and you will be surprised at the condition of this car’s interior – which far exceeds expectations for a car of this age. None of the front or rear seats possess any tears, signs of wear, or stains on their upholstery. All of the interior trim has been restored to factory condition and is pristine – from the wood trim on the instrument cluster to the black leather dashboard. Both leather padded side door panels are fully intact with no visible tears in any of their surfaces – the door handles as well are in excellent condition. Both manually operated doors wind down and up without sticking halfway. The roof lining is also all fully intact. All of the interior carpeting, from the footwells to the rear trunk lining are in pristine condition. The steering wheel is free of any serious wear, as well as the automatic gear shift lever on its plastic and metal trimmed surfaces. All of the air vents are intact with none missing any pieces – every switch and button in the cabin is fully operational with none showing signs of surface wear or stick when touched. All of the interior electronics – from the stereo system to the cabin lights work when switched on. The instrument cluster and all of its gauge faces are free of any damage – while the tachometer is not functioning at this time, the rest of the dials are functional as they should be. The only imperfection to note in this interior would be the letterings on the transmission tunnel in the centre console and the metal trim on its right side – though this can be rectified with some TLC to remove their worn down look or replaced with a refurbished or brand new unit.
Engine and Running Gear
Starting up the 2.0L M10 inline-four (where the 2002 gets its titular nameplate from), the engine bursts into life instantly and with a clean bill of health. The engine bay itself has been kept in excellent condition, with only the smallest amount of naturally occurring patina (as to expected of a classic car) slightly visible on some parts surfaces – otherwise, there are no concerning noises, stains, or liquids dropping from underneath the chassis to worry about. While the tachometer is not functional, the engine revs across the rev range smoothly with no hesitation or pauses in its power delivery – no heavy smoke was observed emitting from the exhaust pipe either. The steering is in fully functional order with no play observed. The brakes are responsive for a car of this time. The automatic transmission shifts through all of its gears without any issues. This is a fine example of what BMW termed as “a sports car in a limousine’s clothing” upon its launch – a pristine BMW 2002 that is available to you now at the Car Farm.
