Based on the Ford Sierra sedan, the Sierra RS Cosworth was the brainchild of Ford’s Motorsport division and fellow British automotive engineering firm Cosworth. Aimed to meet Group A touring car and rally homologation requirements in Europe, the Sierra RS Cosworth was extensively modified inside and out to make it as competitive as possible with its fellow European rivals – whether it be German (BMW, Audi, Mercedes) or fellow British cars (Vauxhall). Compared to standard Sierras, Sierra Cosworths featured an upgraded 2.0L Cosworth-tuned YB turbocharged & intercooled inline-four cylinder engine, mated to a five-speed Borg-Warner T5 manual transmission (shared with the Ford Mustang) with a limited-slip differential. 0-100 km/h could be achieved in just 6.7 seconds, and thanks to the specially designed aerodynamic enhancements – a larger rear hatch spoiler as well as a redesigned front bumper to allow greater airflow and downforce, could reach a top speed of 242 km/h. The chassis was further enhanced by Ford’s Special Engineering Division to include different spring rates to the existing MacPherson front axle & semi-trailing arm setup, along with new dampers, anti-roller bars, and a quicker steering rack. In total, 7,200 examples were made during its total production run from 1986 to 1992.

Engine and Running Gear
Starting up the 2.0L turbocharged Cosworth-tuned inline-four cylinder YB engine and it springs to life instantly – with the upgraded exhaust note audible to the ears as a subtle hint this is no regular Ford Sierra. Thanks to the maintenance and upkeep this Sierra Cosworth has received, the engine is running in perfect working condition – boost from the turbocharger picks up easily with a subtle amount of turbo lag as expected of an 80s performance car. Visual inspection found the engine bay to be in excellent condition – all of the parts are in working order and none display any patina. The 5-Speed Borg Warner manual transmission feels sharp and precise to use with each gear change – reminding the driver this is a car setup for the track and hard driving. The steering has plenty of feedback with no play observed – the driver is encouraged to push through the corners hard with the car remaining stable and planted at high speed. The brakes are responsive to bring this sports coupe to a halt. Fast Fords are always an enthusiast favourite and are very sought after these days – among collectors, motorsport fans, and Ford followers alike.
