The MX-5 NB, also known as the second-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata, is a popular two-seater sports car that was produced by Mazda from 1998 to 2005. Its lightweight construction, responsive handling, and approachable driving dynamics have made it a beloved choice for those seeking an affordable and engaging sports car experience. It is equipped with a 1.8-liter inline-four engine, which produces around 140 horsepower.
Presented to you at the Car Farm is a red 1999 MX-5 NB paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. We were told by the seller that it is an original Hong Kong market car sold new from Mazda Hong Kong back in 2000. It was first registered on 25th January 2000. The seller acquired the car 3 years ago. It is mostly original besides the Aftermarket wheels (original MX5 NB alloy wheels were kept), the Aftermarket Sony stereo head unit, and the gear shifter. It is equipped with the genuine OEM optional colour-matching hardtop, Nardi leather steering wheel, and tan leather seats. The car is maintained by its owner. He has an Excel sheet logging all service history, and all the invoices kept for the parts he purchased. It recently has gone through a clutch, engine gasket, and transmission gasket replacement. The car has a reported mileage of 84,134miles (135,400km). The road license is valid till 15th January, 2024.
The original red paint bodywork was observed to be in rough shape on some of its panels, but the good news is we did not notice any obvious rust or serious structural damage. Stone chips are found on the front bumper. Sun damage is mostly located on the hood, hardtop, and left rear quarter panel surfaces. All these can benefit from TLC to restore its original appearance and condition. Both side doors, the front bonnet, and the rear trunk lid open and close normally. Both headlights function as they should; however, they have turned foggy due to UV oxidation, whereas the rear taillights are in great condition. The seller stated that the factory Tan soft top remains secure inside the cabin and is in good condition. All four aftermarket wheels are in great condition with no visible kerb rash or serious damage. All Mazda emblems are present with no major surface wear observed.
Interior and Trim
Open the doors of this MX-5 (NB), step inside and the MX-5’s compact interior greets the occupants. Although the seats are not in perfect shape with wear and tear on their leather upholstery, the seats are supportive as of day one. Again, this problem could benefit from TLC to restore its original appearance and condition. The Nardi steering wheel is in good condition as is the genuine wooden hand brake lever and the aftermarket gear shifter. All sections of the plastic dashboard are intact with no surface damage or cracks. All the centre console pieces are in good condition with the digital clock works as it should. Both side door panels remain intact with some surface damage on the handles. All the interior controls and switchgear operate their functions normally. The cluster gauge illuminates perfectly and is easy to read.
Engine and Running Gear
The 1.8L four-cylinder engine comes to life with the turn of the key. Power delivery from this engine is smooth and strong. The steering has plenty of feedback and thanks to this roadster’s low centre of gravity and curb weight, this MX5 feels confident to push hard and remains planted to the ground through the corners. Gears are precise to use, combined with the inputs from the steering and pedals – all of which complement each other to provide a driving experience that is engaging with the driver. The brakes provide enough stopping power to bring this MX-5 to a halt. It is truly a good example of a lightweight, driver-focused sports car and an appreciating classic from Mazda. For anyone who is looking for an MX-5 project car – This NB MX-5 is now available at the Car Farm.
