The first generation Mazda MX-5 (known as EUNOS Roadster in Japan) was introduced in 1989 – designed as a lightweight open-2 seater rear wheel drive sports car. With its rather compact body and manual soft-top – it weighed in at 950kg. In 1994, the MX-5 housed a larger 1.8L engine and increased overall weight to 990 kg – however, the added weight did not affect the MX-5 significantly due to the power increase to 130hp. Offered in either a 5-Speed Manual Transmission or 4-Speed Automatic Transmission, the MX-5 NA today is a desirable driver’s car looking for the perfect lightweight, rear-wheel drive Japanese roadster, incorporating Mazda’s philosophy of ‘Jinba Ittai’ – driver and car as one.
Produced solely for the Japanese market, MX-5 NA8C V-Spec models stood out from other MX-5 NA models by featuring a limited-slip differential as standard equipment to improve the already perfect handling setup. In addition, V-Spec models came with a wood-trimmed Nardi steering wheel, wood-trimmed handbrake lever, and gear shift knob, as well as a Tan leather interior.
This is a 1994 Mazda MX-5 NA8C V-Spec, finished in British Racing Green with a Tan interior. It was originally imported from Japan to Hong Kong in 2021. The car has only 1 previous owner reported on the Vehicle Registration Document. Modifications on this MX-5 include a set of 15” Equip wheels, suspension, roll/style bar, Strut tower bar, vintage bullet-racing style side mirrors, Pioneer touchscreen stereo head unit with reverse camera, and a wood instrument cluster. The dashboard, centre console, door cards, and seats have been refurbished with fresh and premium leather upholstery. The manual soft top roof was replaced with a new unit two years ago. This MX-5 has a current mileage of 141,388km, and the current road license is valid until 12th July 2024.
The Green bodywork was observed to be in great condition all around. As we looked farther around its body, we did not notice any obvious rust or serious paint damage. However, we did notice a few minor scratches on the front bumper, a tiny dent on the driver-side door, and on the left quarter panel. All these issues can benefit from TLC to restore their original appearance. The side doors, front bonnet, and rear trunk lid open and close normally. The popup headlights function as they should, with the side indicators and rear taillights in great condition. The 2-year-old vinyl soft top is in great condition without any surface tear or crack; the soft top plastic rear window remains clear without turning yellow due to UV oxidation. All four Equip deep-dish wheels are in great condition with no visible kerb rash or serious damage although the front tires will need replacing soon. The “Eunos” badge on the rear number plate panel is present with no major surface wear observed.
Interior and Trim
Open the doors of this MX-5 (NA), step inside and this luxurious compact interior greets the occupants. Both leather bucket seats are in excellent condition with no tear or wear on their surface, they are firm and supportive. Both door cards are wrapped in Tan leather material, with great patterns stitched on the surface. The dashboard and centre console are also completely refinished with Brown leather material. The wood Nardi steering wheel is in great condition, as are the wood Nardi gear shifter and the handbrake lever. All the aluminum trim pieces on the electric window buttons panel, cup holder, and gear shift panel are in great condition without obvious scratches or cracks. All the interior controls and switchgear operate their functions normally. The cluster gauge illuminates perfectly and is easy to read. The Pioneer Double Din touchscreen stereo head unit is easy to use. To summarize, the interior of this vehicle exudes a premium feel in every aspect, including its meticulous attention to detail and tactile experience.
Engine and Running Gear
The 1.8L four-cylinder engine comes to life with the turn of the key. Power delivery from this engine is smooth. All five gears are precise to use with each gear change, combined with the inputs from the steering and pedals – all of which complement each other to provide a driving experience that is engaging with the driver. The suspension ride height remains in optimal setting and does not cause any rubbing with the tires. The brakes provide plenty of stopping power to bring this MX-5 to a halt. This Mazda MX5 NA Eunos Roadster V Special is truly the perfect example of a tastefully modified, lightweight, driver-focused sports car and an appreciating classic from Mazda– now available at the Car Farm.
