Model History
The R107-generation Mercedes-Benz SL is second in line after the G-Class as Mercedes-Benz’s longest-running produced chassis – until 1989. The 300SL was introduced in 1985, replacing the 280SL, it featured a 3.0L naturally aspirated inline six, producing a strong 187hp to the rear wheels. Later models are desired by car collectors, due to their upgrades such as a reworked suspension, anti-roll bars, and 4-pot front brake callipers increasing the car’s overall handling.
The R107 generation SL not only became an icon for the Mercedes Benz brand at the time but also became a frequent star in various 1970s-80s television shows and films, from The Six Million Dollar Man to American Gigolo, as well as making appearances in current generation media – notably in a live performance of The Weeknd’s ‘Save Your Tears’.
History File
This is a 1988 Mercedes Benz R107 300 SL, finished in Midnight Blue with a Grey interior. This was originally imported and sold as a Zung Fu (Mercedes Benz Hong Kong) car. The current keeper acquired this car in 2018 from the previous keeper, who owned it for 10 years. They state they have rarely driven this car, typically using it for work commutes every 2-3 weeks and have always stored it indoors.
The sole modification reported on this car is a Continental period-correct stereo head unit with Bluetooth connectivity – no major changes are reported to the exterior or running gear.
This SL has been extensively restored inside and out, as well as being serviced by the same North Point garage for the past 15 years. This includes a full exterior respray using original Mercedes Midnight Blue paint, as well as a restoration of both the front and rear bumpers (including the chrome trim), all of the exterior plastic window trim, and the fabric soft top has been changed to a Blue fabric unit – all of these replacement parts were sourced from classic Mercedes SL specialist ‘SL Shop’ in the UK. The current keeper also reports the air conditioning has been recently fully recharged, the suspension units have been replaced, and both leather seats have been refurbished with original Mercedes leather. In addition, the central locking system has been replaced. The current keeper does report that the odometer was replaced at one point in its previous life.
The original factory hardtop roof, including the attached roof stand, will be included with the purchase of this SL. This R107 SL has had six previous owners and has a valid road licence until January 19, 2024.
Exterior
The Midnight Blue exterior on this SL is in great condition – the respray that was done previously was of professional grade using matching Mercedes paint. No blemishes or surface imperfections were noted on the body panels. Both the front and rear external bumpers are intact. All sections of the external chrome trim were observed to be in relatively good condition – the middle chrome trim portion on the rear (below the rear Mercedes badge) does display some visible surface ageing, but can benefit from a refurbishment if desired. The front headlights & fog lights, rear tail lights, and side markers illuminate normally. Both side doors, the front bonnet, and the rear trunk lid open and close normally. The side door handles and door mirrors are intact. The fixed hardtop roof is free of any surface sun damage and is intact on all of its sections. All four Mercedes Benz alloy wheels are in great condition. All of the exterior Mercedes Benz badges and emblems are present and none show any major surface wear.
Interior and Trim
Step inside and the SL’s classic interior greets the occupants, full of leather surfaces and select wood trim portions. Both front and rear Grey leather seats are in great condition and supportive of the occupants thanks to their refurbishment. The steering wheel is in good condition, as is the gear shift lever and handbrake cover. The dashboard is free of any major surface damage, and all of the wood trim is intact. Both side door panels are aligned with the doors, and the lower side door sills are free of any major surface marks. The Continental stereo head unit operates normally as it should. All of the dials in the instrument cluster relay their relevant information normally. All of the cabin switchgear and buttons remain solid to touch and use.
Engine and Running Gear
The 3.0L inline-six-cylinder engine equipped on this 300 SL starts up instantly with a turn of the key. Power delivery from this engine is smooth as expected of a luxury roadster, complimented by a very comfortable and stable ride that is perfect for long-distance drives. The current keeper reports the steering has been adjusted to be tighter than normal, allowing for slightly more responsiveness when used. The 4G-TRONIC automatic transmission works normally – kick-down is responsive when demanded and all of the gears engage normally. The brakes provide plenty of stopping power to bring this SL to a prompt halt. The R107 generation SL is a timeless classic Mercedes luxury roadster that remains a fine representation of the brand’s peak era, such as this example now available at the Car Farn.
