Model History
Launched in 1977, the Porsche 928 was intended to serve as a direct replacement for the brand’s iconic two-door, rear-engined sports coupe: the 911. Instead, the 911 remained in production and the 928 became its own distinct nameplate: serving as Porsche’s flagship model that contained all the comforts and amenities of a luxury sedan with the power and handling of a Porsche sports car. Featuring an aerodynamic design led by Anatole Lapine, the striking design also featured various weight-saving measures – including aluminium doors, front bonnet, and fenders, as well as a zinc-galvanized body. These measures to make the 928 as light as possible were also combined with the inclusion of a transaxle to achieve a perfect 50:50 weight distribution, as well as an entirely new rear axle up, known as the ‘Weissach Axle’ to allow for perfect toe-in stability. The 928 also ensured drivers and any occupants could travel in total comfort: with amenities such as air conditioning, power windows, cruise control, as well as a first for automotive interior design: a height adjustable steering wheel with an instrument cluster that also moved simultaneously for better driver visibility. As well as being the first mass-produced V8 by the brand, the 928 remains the only coupe model Porsche has produced powered by a front-mounted V8 engine.

Exterior
The Cassis Red Metallic paint finish on this 928 S4 is in excellent condition as a result of the high-end respray it received – all of the body panels align with each other with none displaying any surface damage or imperfections. The front and rear bumper, as well as the side fenders are free of any imperfections. Both headlights, the rear taillights and side markers illuminate normally – the front headlights mechanically raise and lower themselves seamlessly. The rear trunk lid spoiler is fully intact on all of its portions. Both side doors, the bonnet and boot open and close without any difficulties. Both side mirrors do not show any surface damage. All four original Porsche alloy wheels are free of any kerb rash. All of the exterior window trim is intact. The Porsche emblems and badges are fully intact with neither showing any tired surfaces.
Interior and Trim
Look inside and a 80s Porsche interior greets the occupants – surrounding them with Kaschmir Beige leather upholstery and Dark Red trim. Both front and rear leather seats only show minimal creases over the years – the driver’s front seat does show some subtle wear on its right bolster, but like the rest of the seats, possess no severe tears in their surfaces. The leather appointed steering wheel and gear shifter do display some subtle wear in their leather surfaces: the right corners of the steering wheel were found to have some minor leather peeling, as well as some minor tears in the top portion of the gear shifter – these aesthetic imperfections do not affect their operations and both still feel solid to use in the driver’s hands. The dashboard is free of any blemishes or surface scratches on all of its portions. Both door panels are intact with none displaying any major signs of wear on their plastic or leather surfaces. The door scuff plates are free from any signs of wear or fade. All of the cabin switches and buttons are intact and all of them operate normally without any stickiness – the indicator side stalk displays minor signs of fade, however a replacement stalk can bring its appearance to the same standard as the rest of the switchgear – which are free of any surface blemishes. The SONY stereo system is fully functional and all of the interior electronics, from the air-conditioning to power windows function without any issues as well.
Engine and Running Gear
Starting up the 5.0L 32-valve V8 immediately springs it to life – as expected of a fully rebuilt unit, this engine runs perfectly with no mechanical issues or discoloured smoke observed from the exhaust pipe. The 5.0L V8 engine itself is in excellent condition – the engine bay is immaculate and all of the internals are in excellent condition. The 4-Speed automatic torque-converter transmission shifts normally and engages all of its gears without any issues. The steering and suspension are responsive with plenty of feedback as expected of a Porsche sports car – we observed no odd noises from the undercarriage during our test drive. The brakes are responsive and provide ample amounts of stopping power. The Porsche 928 Coupe served as the brand’s flagship, grand tourer model and still remains one of the few exceptions in Porsche’s model history to not have the engine located in the rear. This 928 S4 is a perfect example of one that has been fully restored mechanically and aesthetically and is perfect for any Porsche collectors or enthusiasts to enjoy – exclusively available at the Car Farm.
