Description
Model History
Introduced in 2006, the Porsche Cayman was the first two-seater coupe from Porsche in 30 years since the 914. Based on the Boxster roadster, the Cayman shared the same range of engines, transmission, and underpinnings, but with the added benefit of a fixed hardtop. Engines included a 2.7 and 3.4-litre engine – both flat-six units, paired with either a 5 or 6-Speed manual or Porsche Tiptronic transmission. The performance-focused model, the ‘Cayman S’ housed a 3.4L flat-six naturally-aspirated engine and shared the same brakes as found on the 911 Carrera. It was versatile and practical with its luggage space, and its mid-engined rear-wheel drive layout proved to be well-balanced in comparison to the 911.
History File
Featured here is a 2006 Porsche 987.1 Cayman S Tiptronic, finished in Night Blue Metallic with a Sand Beige interior. This car was imported and originally sold as new as a Jebsen (Porsche Hong Kong) car – with all of the original documents, including the original new car sales invoice kept on file. The current owner acquired this Cayman S from an acquaintance in their network, who previously acquired this car (as the 2nd registered owner) from their father. Aside from a Pioneer head unit and upgraded in-car stereo speakers (with subwoofer installed in the rear cargo compartment) installed by the previous owner, no other significant changes to the exterior, interior, and running gear have been done to this car. The full-service record of this car from 2015 onwards (the past 7-8 years) will also be provided: the current owner, as well as both previous owners, have used the same garage in Hong Kong to perform all of the maintenance and routine servicing on this car. Since taking ownership of this car in March 2022, they have replaced one of the side window motors and have performed a routine oil change. The current owner does note the following imperfections on this car: some minor scuff and surface marks are present on the exterior, the LCD display in the middle of the instrument cluster does display some missing pixels, and the brake pads are due for a replacement soon. This Cayman S has had three previous owners, has a current mileage of 76,873 km and the current road licence is valid until 15th March, 2023.
Exterior
On visual inspection, the Night Blue Metallic exterior on this Cayman S was found to be preserved in excellent condition. While the current owner reports there are some minor exterior surface marks on this car from regular use, none of the body panels, bumpers, or side portions show any serious damage or imperfections. Both doors, the front and rear cargo lids open and close without any issues – none of their hinges or latches shows any patina. Both side door mirrors and handles are free of any scratches. Both headlights and taillights as well as the side markers and fog lights illuminate normally. Both rear side vents are also fully intact. Both rear exhaust tips are intact with neither displaying any surface patina. All four 18” 5-Spoke Cayman S alloy wheels are in excellent condition with no kerb rash. All of the exterior badges – from the Porsche to the ‘Cayman S’ emblems are present with none displaying any surface wear. The powered rear spoiler raises and lowers without any issues.
Interior and Trim
The inside of this compact Porsche sports car greets the driver with a cockpit ever focused on the driver. Both leather seats are in excellent condition with no major tears or visible surface wear in any of their Sand Beige upholstery. The leather steering wheel, gear shift knob, and handbrake lever are free of any serious surface wear. All of the dashboard and surrounding trim are intact and free of any major surface scratches. Both side door panels and lower scuff plates with ‘Cayman S’ emblems are free of any scratches or marks. All of the cabin switchgear and buttons operate normally, though the driver’s side air conditioning fan button does display some surface wear and some surface marks are visible on the headlight switch surrounding trim; these aesthetic imperfections can be resolved with a replacement unit and some TLC to restore their original appearance. As reported by the current owner, the middle LCD instrument cluster display (below the tachometer) does show a few missing pixels, but a replacement unit can resolve this imperfection – the normal display functions work normally and the rest of the instrument cluster’s dials work without any issues. The Pioneer touchscreen head unit operates normally as well as the upgraded stereo system speakers (with the subwoofer) to allow for an enhanced in-car audio experience.
Engine and Running Gear
Turn the key and the 3.4L naturally-aspirated flat-six engine starts up instantly. Thanks to the regular maintenance and care this car has received throughout its life, the engine and powertrain run in excellent condition with no mechanical issues. The 5-Speed Tiptronic transmission changes gear smoothly – left in either automatic mode or shifted manually. The steering provides plenty of feedback to the driver, allowing the Cayman’s mid-engined setup to shine as it remains planted and responsive when pushed through any degree of corners. All of the brakes are responsive – while the current owner reports the brake pads could benefit from replacement units soon, this does not affect the normal operation of the brakes under regular use. For those looking for a compact Porsche sports coupe that can serve as an excellent all-rounder, both for the weekdays and weekends, this Porsche 987.1 Cayman S is the perfect candidate for the job – now available at the Car Farm.
