In 1993, Porsche introduced the 993 as the successor of the 964. For the first time since its release 30 years prior, the 993 featured a lower front profile and was the last generation of classic 911s to feature the oval headlights and as highlighted by Porsche enthusiasts, the iconic air-cooled engine. The 993 was offered in many variants, from the Carrera, Targa, the Turbo and the almighty GT2. The 993 Carrera hosted a 3.6L flat-six engine with the same bore and stroke as its predecessor the 964. With a power output of 272hp, there were two available transmissions – the four speed Tiptronic Automatic or the 5-Speed manual transmission. Unofficially crowned as the most sophisticated and prettiest 911 of all time, the 993 is an already appreciating classic. The 993 Targa was a unique design on its own – straying away from the traditional roll-bar concept, in place was an electronically operated glass window that slid snuggly behind the rear window. The 993 Targa was thermally insulated and UV-filtered, keeping the cabin warm and cool depending on the seasons.
Featured here is a 1996 Porsche 911 993 Targa Tiptronic, finished in Arctic Silver with a Black interior. It is an original Hong Kong market car sold by Jebsen, which the current owner acquired through Gemballa Hong Kong. Adding to this, this 993 Targa has a Gemballa front bumper, 993 Turbo alloy wheels, as well as 933 Turbo seats – all of the invoices and service history this car has received at Gemballa Hong Kong will be provided. The stereo was changed to a period-correct Blaupunkt unit (with Bluetooth connectivity) by the current owner, who also has spared no expense to keep this car in pristine condition and full working order. With seven previous owners, this 993 Targa’s most recent M.O.T. was completed on 18 May, 2022 and its current road license is valid until February 28, 2023.
The exterior of this 993 Targa has been preserved well – with all of the original paint finish kept and in excellent condition. While the owner does report a small mark on the rear bumper from stone chips, this can be touched up to remove this minor imperfection. The Gemballa front bumper and side skirts are in excellent condition with no imperfections. Both doors, the front cargo lid and rear engine cover open and close without any problems – no corrosion was reported on their hinges or latches. The front headlights, rear tail lights, and side markers operate normally. The Targa roof and surrounding windows are crystal clear with the window trim throughout in very good condition. All of the original Porsche badges and ‘Targa’ emblem are present with no missing trim pieces. All four Turbo wheels are in excellent condition with no kerb rash with minor signs of classic car patina – depending on the new owner, a refurbishment could be made to brighten them up. Both exhaust tailpipes are intact with no patina.
Interior and Trim
The interior is classic 90s Porsche – with the iconic 5 cluster gauges that span across the dashboard and a cockpit designed purely for the driver in mind. Both front and rear leather seats are pristine with no tears and only minor creases from regular use. The leather steering wheel is in excellent condition. The silver gear shift knob and plastic transmission panel have no wear. Both door sills and scuff plates have no scuff marks. All of the buttons and switches have reassuring mechanical ‘clicks’ and none are missing any trim or show signs of their age. The Blaupunkt stereo system functions normally as well as its separate remote control. All of the chrome surrounds of the dials and instruments are in excellent shape – as observed from them being clear to read while the chrome trim still shines.
Engine and Running Gear
Switching on this 993 Targa was done with ease – the 3.6L flat-six engine gave its signature air-cooled rumble and in true 90s engineering, the steering was weighted in comparison to its modern siblings. The engine was responsive and was not hesitant to be revved to the redline – being the last of the ‘Vario-Ram’ engines, this has been upheld among the Porsche community as one of the best engines available for the 911 range. The Tiptronic automatic transmission was reactive and not sluggish. Under heavy braking, the brakes performed great, and the suspension was well balanced –allowing for a comfortable ride in the city whilst remaining planted and inspiring confidence in the chassis when taken out on the open roads. A perfect combination of the modern Porsche luxuries, with the classic air-cooled flat-six engines and the expansive driving experience thanks to the Targa top. The 993 generation of the 911 sports car is arguably one of the best blends of classic and modern motoring you can enjoy everyday. This fine 993 Targa can be yours to enjoy – available now at the Car Farm.
