Model History
Released in 1992, the first generation of the Subaru Impreza contained all of the classic ingredients of what made a Subaru, a Subaru – all-wheel-drive and a horizontally-opposed ‘Boxer’ engine. Available as a two-door coupe, a four-door sedan and five- door wagon (hatchback), the Impreza largely served as Subaru’s first step into the global small, economical car market segment. Powertrains ranged from a 1.6L to a 1.8L engine, with 2.0L and 2.2L engines added to the lineup in later models – available turbocharged and non-turbocharged. For those wanting a little more – the WRX (abbreviation for World Rally Xperimental) models were available. These used the Impreza’s existing body and chassis, but featured rally-inspired technology and other drivetrain enhancements: including all-wheel-drive, stiffer suspension, and turbocharged engines. The flagship Impreza model, though, came in the form of the Impreza WRX STI (Subaru Tecnica International) that was first introduced in 1994. This further improved upon the WRX’s performance and styling enhancements – featuring more powerful engines, transmissions, and specially-tuned suspension settings exclusive to these performance-oriented models. WRX STI models further proved their performance capabilities when they were entered into the world of rallying. Thanks to drivers such as Colin McRae, the model saw numerous victories in various rally championships and stages worldwide, including six individual World Rally Championship (WRC) victories between 1995-2003. Production of the first generation Impreza lasted until 2000, with over ten million units sold during its entire run.

Exterior
The WRC Blue exterior wrap on this GC8 Type R remains in overall good condition as observed from the amount of light which reflects off of its body – with the ‘Type R’ sticker and STi (fog light cover) stickers in their original positions. While the current headlights are aftermarket units – the original headlights will be included with the purchase. The tail lights are in good condition, free from any significant signs of wear. An aftermarket set of 5-Spoke Gold wheels have been installed however keep the theme of the signature ‘Gold’ wheels. All of the emblems from the signature Pink ‘STi’ badge, to the STi badge on the right side fender remain vibrant in colour. All of the body panels appear aligned and straight, with the rear spoiler securely placed on the boot. As expected of a car of this calibre that is meant to be driven, there are minor imperfections observed on the bonnet, from stone chips – we did not observe any bubbling from the WRC Blue wrap.
Interior and Trim
Open up the doors of this GC8 Type R, we are greeted with a classic 90s minimalist interior. All of the components remain in great shape, from the dashboard, to the centre console, and door panels which are free from any significant signs of wear or tear. The condition of the seats are very good, with no signs of wear – especially on the outer seat bolsters of the front seats. Their material remains firm and vibrant in colour. The front seat’s manual adjustments operate as they should in a smooth manner. Due to the exterior WRC Blue wrap, there are portions of this GC8 Type R that reveal its original Pure White paint – as observed when the doors are fully open, and towards the door sill plates. For a car of this age and usage, there are minor signs of scuff marks on the bottom left hand corner of the centre console in proximity to the side mirror adjustment. The climate control knobs are free from any stickiness and remain vibrant in colour. The black STi shift knob and shift boot are in great condition, just as the factory original MOMO steering wheel. The cluster gauge illuminates as it should in green when the parking lights or head lights are engaged. The air-conditioning blows out cold and the aftermarket Pioneer DMH-Z6350BT stereo head unit is installed with a factory finish.
Engine and Running Gear
At the turn of the key, we are greeted with the signature rumble from the flat-four EJ20 engine, enhanced by the Kakimoto middle and rear exhaust. Everything felt solid, from the gear changes to the steering, providing plenty of feedback and fun to the driver. The GC8 Type R in today’s world is an agile and nimble vehicle with championship winning rally DNA and it is experienced with driving through the corners and straights, where it remains very planted to the ground and confidence inspiring thanks to the ‘Yellow’ coilovers. The driver can change the driving characteristics from the ‘C.Diff’ or Centre Differential dial underneath the shift knob, where it affects where the power is delivered – depending on the road conditions or the driver’s demand, it can lead to oversteer or understeer. The brakes provided ample of stopping power and the sounds of the EJ20 were intoxicating. Overall this GC8 Type R provided a very solid driving experience, suited for anyone looking to take on a 90s JDM icon, available to you now at the Car Farm!
