Introduced in 2014 was the Subaru VA, a direct descent from the Subaru Impreza – available in either WRX or WRX STi form that keeps tradition of housing the iconic 2.0L flat-four (EJ20) engine since its introduction in 1989 in the Subaru Legacy. Although it has a smaller displacement than its EJ25 sibling, it is known to be more durable and is able to endure more enthusiastic driving. The EJ20 produces 308hp, and is matched with most would say is the best six-speed manual transmission available. Staying true to its all-wheel drive system, it is equipped with SI-Drive (Subaru Intelligent-Drive) which changes the driving characteristics of the car, based on the driving mode and DCCD (Driver’s Control Centre Differential) which manages the distribution of the torque to either the front or the rear wheels. With the announcement of the halt in production of the WRX STi model, it marks the end of an era of the top of the line road-legal rally machine – making it an opportunity for you to own the last generation of WRX STi.
Presented to you at the Car Farm is a 2020 Subaru VA WRX STI finished in Crystal White Pearl. An original Subaru Hong Kong vehicle, with JDM Specification, including the iconic EJ207 engine – the 2.0L Flat-Four turbocharged unit. There has been a few tasteful upgrades, such as the Ohlins DFV dampers, Recaro CS Seats, 18” TE37SL SAGA wheels wrapped with Bridgestone RE-71RS tyres, a Tomei EXPREME Ti (titanium) exhaust, an STi strut bar, and STi bushings. It has received routine maintenance, including an engine oil change, front and rear differential oil change – all of which was approximately 3,000km to 4,000km prior. All of the original parts such as the seats and 19” wheels will be included with the purchase, along with an Invidia exhaust that was installed onto this example. To keep both the exterior and interior at bay an exterior coating and window tint has been applied. Our VA WRX STi has one previous owner, a current mileage of 10,625km and a valid road license until 4th March 2023.
The Crystal White Pearl paint on this VA WRX STi is in pristine condition, as observed from the amount of light that reflects off of its body. As expected from a car of this calibre that has WRC DNA, there are minor stone chips observed on the bottom corners of the front bumpers. The front lip, and aggressive air intake vents are free from any signs of scratches or fade in colour. All of the Subaru and STi emblems and badges on the front grille, side fenders and boot remain vibrant in colour with the chrome accents shining. There are no blemishes observed on the headlights, taillights or side indicators, all of which function as they should and are crystal clear. We did not notice any kerb rashes or oxidation for the 18” Volk Racing TE37SL SAGA wheels, which have all of their stickers fully intact. The fluorescent yellow-green 6-Pot Brembo brake calipers for the front and 2-Pot calipers for the rear are in excellent condition, with no scratches or marks on the STi logo. The window trim is in like-new condition – free from any signs of oxidation or fade from excessive UV exposure. All of the body panels are aligned, with the rear spoiler securely placed with the boot.
Interior and Trim
Open up the doors of this modern WRX STi, we are greeted with a handsome pair of Recaro CS seats for the front passengers. With subtle hints of red inside the cabin, as noticed from the dashboard cover, rear seats, shift knob and door panels which liven up the driving experience for both driver and passengers. All of the seats are firm and supportive, with little to no signs of usage or creases. The steering wheel has an STi emblem on the bottom, with the shift knob face in red. The centre console is in pristine condition, as observed from the condition of the buttons, which are factory fresh and the chrome accents which are not dull. The door STi sill plates are protected by a layer of blue film, as are the rear door panel’s trim with a white protective layer. The interior carpeting throughout is in great condition – and although not pictured, a complete set of STi floor mats will be included with the purchase. The displays for both the cluster gauge and infotainment system operate as they should, with no missing pixels.
Engine and Running Gear
Switching on this JDM specification WRX STi was an effortless experience, thanks to the Engine Start/Stop button located below the steering wheel on the right hand side. The familiar sounds of the EJ20 boxer rumble was heard and pronounced thanks to the Tomei EXPREME Ti exhaust. The ride was composed – a good balance between sport and comfort, proving that the Ohlins DFV dampers were installed correctly with a current setup that is fit for the roads of Hong Kong. The VA WRX STi in true Subaru fashion provided solid performance and confidence around the corners, regardless of the weather conditions (dry or wet) – a lot of it is due to its SI-Drive (Subaru Intelligent-Drive) and DCCD (Driver’s Control Centre Differential). The 6-Pot Brembo brakes in the front provided an ample amount of stopping power to this chassis and remained in a straight line under hard braking.
