Model History
The Suzuki Jimny was first introduced in 1970 – as an all-wheel drive off-road mini SUV originally designed to meet the requirements of the ‘kei-class’ or Japan’s light/small capacity engined automobile tax class. It has gained its reputation as a solid and capable city and off-road car, one of the rare vehicles that combine both elements. The Jimny features a ladder-frame chassis, which combats body twist with little to no flex of the chassis. The fourth generation Jimny was released to the public in 2018 and stayed true to the tradition, with its ladder-frame chassis and compactness. Equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated inline-four unit, the Jimny produces 100hp and is offered in either a 5-Speed Manual or 4-Speed Automatic transmission. It is equipped with modern amenities, such as an infotainment system, a Dual Sensor Brake Support (DSBS) which provides both audio and visual warnings that would automatically apply the brakes depending on the situation. With its revised design and size, it has proved to be practical and capable of taking on all of the terrains that lay in front of its path – whether it be in the city or out in the hills.
DAMD (Dream AutoMotive Development & Design) is a Japanese aftermarket specialist, producing body kits dating back to 1982. Some of their most noteworthy entries in their portfolio include their DAMD body kit for the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII driven by Paul Walker in ‘2 Fast 2 Furious’, which won multiple awards from the ‘Tokyo International Custom Car Contest.’ Body kits for the Suzuki Jimny were introduced in 2018 and were proven to be a hit amongst enthusiasts, paying tribute to off-road legends like the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon and Land Rover Defender.
History File
The Jimny shown here is a 2019 Suzuki Jimny, finished in Jungle Green that was originally sold through Island Motors Ltd. as an official Suzuki HK market car. It has undergone a conversion to incorporate DAMD’s ‘Little D’ – aka ‘Little Defender’ body kit. This kit consists of a Defender inspired front bumper, front grille with round blinkers and clear headlight lamps, hood emblem that reads ‘Little D’ (same font used by Land Rovers), rear lower bumper with round blinker lights, mud flaps, and a rear oval ‘Little D’ emblem (also inspired by the Land Rover logo). All of the ‘ Little D’ parts have been painted in matching Jungle Green this car has originally came in – the current owner did swap out the ‘Little D’ hood emblem for one that reads ‘Defender’ for more authenticity and out of personal preference. The Defender-inspired body styling on this example is further complemented with a ‘Front Runner’ roof rack and ‘Expedition’ roof rail kit, mini-rear hatch ladder, and tie-down straps. While the exterior has been modelled to look rough and tough as the Land Rover it is inspired by, this Jimny has never been taken off-road. In addition to the unique body styling/exterior, this JImny has had a GReddy Trust turbocharger kit (including a high flow cat, water tank, and ECU Tune which produces approximately 150hp) installed onto the Jimny’s existing 1.5L four-cylinder petrol engine, complimented with a Fujitsubo Authorise RM muffler. Interior modifications consist of DAMD grey checkered seat covers, interior cargo nets, air-con vent ‘JDM style’ drink holders, Jimny rubber mats, and an Alpine ILX309 head unit with Audison in-car speakers. It currently rides on a set of OZ Dakar Jimny 16” wheels – while the wheel nuts currently on it have some visible patina, the current owner will provide the original wheel nuts if desired by the next owner for a cleaner look. All of the invoices for the modifications will be provided. Regular maintenance has been carried out at Suzuki Hong Kong, as well as Reinart Design by SPS occasionally (who also installed all of the aftermarket parts, including the ‘Little D’ body conversion itself). Uniquely, it is equipped with the 5-Speed manual transmission. It has only one previous owner, a current mileage of 14,994 km, and its road license is valid until 13th June, 2023.
Exterior
The Defender inspired bodykit on this Jimny is easy to draw admirers and the attention of passersby – with the kit itself perfectly made to fit on a Jimny as if it came from the factory as a mini Land Rover Defender. The Jungle Green paint finish has been kept in excellent condition with no stone chip damage, scratches or dents visible on any of the body panels. The front/rear bumpers and side portions are all in perfect condition – including the surrounding trim pieces, Defender-inspired grille, and rear spare wheel cover. All of the badges are fully intact and aligned to the body with none missing any pieces. The headlights, tail lights, and side markers are fully intact and function normally when switched on. All of the body panels – either those that make up the ‘Little D’ body kit or those from the original Jimny body align with each other with no significant panel gaps. All of the exterior off-roader/overland-oriented accessories – from the roof rack to the rear hatch ladder are installed professionally and none have any serious wear on their surfaces. The exhaust tip is free of any visible corrosion. Despite the patina on the wheel nuts, all four 16” OZ Dakar wheels are in excellent condition with no kerb rash or damage on their surfaces.
Interior and Trim
Open the doors and you will find a compact Jimny interior that has been tastefully modified – largely with accessories from various Japanese aftermarket brands. The manually operated cloth seats are in excellent condition; the DAMD checkered seat covers have preserved them well from regular use. The side door trim and plastic side door sills on both sides are free of any damage or wear. When the lights are switched on, the cabin is illuminated by amber lights as observed from the cluster gauge, climate control system and buttons. The manual shift knob is in perfect condition, as is the 4×4 mode selector with no wear on their surfaces. The multi-functioning steering wheel has been kept in mint condition – with the infotainment system controls on the left hand side, and the cruise control settings on the right hand side. The Alpine head unit is fully functional, as well as its reversing camera function – all of the speakers work without any problems. There was no significant wear observed on the shifter or handbrake lever.
Engine and Running Gear
Starting up the 1.5L four-cylinder engine is an instantaneous experience – with the engine note more audible thanks to the GReddy intake and Fuitsubo muffler. The engine bay is in pristine condition – the GReddy turbo kit was installed professionally and all of the wires etc. are tucked neatly in the engine bay. Compared to a standard Jimny, this example has more than enough power to get it up to speed with minimal turbo lag. The ride was the perfect balance of firm and comfort, and all of the driver inputs such as the steering and pedals were easy to use. Thanks to its ladder-frame chassis, the Jimny is designed perfectly for the city, or off-road expeditions with its high-clearance and enhanced 4×4 system with three driving settings – ranging from 2WD to 4WD and a clever LSD traction control system that applies the brakes to the wheel(s) as it senses the tyres are losing traction. The manual transmission is precise to shift and all of the gears engage without any issues – the clutch has plenty of feedback.
